It is with a great deal of sadness that we communicate to you, our cherished friends, of the difficult decision to discontinue the Just 'Cause Catering Operation effective December 31, 2008.

Over three years ago, the Second Helpings Board had a visionary idea to develop a catering operation that would support our mission by generating a consistent income stream. A focused team of staff, Board and Advisory members have worked relentlessly to fulfill this vision. Unfortunately, due to many challenges for Just 'Cause Catering the review and decision had to be made.

We can't tell you how difficult it was for the Board to make this decision. The consensus is that we need to stay focused (energy and resources) on our core mission; feeding the hungry, culinary job training and food rescue. Just 'Cause Catering brought synergies and opportunities as well as a great staff to Second Helpings, but the financials of Just Cause Catering and the increase of local competition made the economic outlook of Just Cause Catering over the next year very poor.

The organization is proud of Just 'Cause Catering as an entrepreneurial endeavor; we should also acknowledge that the Board was willing to make a tough but fiscally responsible decision about the operation.
